Natural Born Heroes: How a Daring Band of Misfits Mastered the Lost Secrets of Strength and Endurance, by Christopher McDougall

Review

“A mash note to physical endurance. . . . McDougall redefines the heroic ideal, establishing heroism as a skill set rather than a virtue. . . . [And] schools the reader in the art of the champion. . . . The essential narrative here, the twisty tale of a kidnapping that incredibly goes right, is exciting. It is balanced out with the journalistic account of McDougall’s entry into the world of the hero. His personal quest to ‘rewild the psyche’ might seem an awkward fit with war storytelling. But under McDougall’s sure hand the combination improbably works. Kind of like kidnapping a German general on an island swarming with Nazi troops.” —NPR Books   “A heady confection that encompasses, among other subjects, military history, archaeology, Greek mythology, neat ways to kill a man and ideas on health and fitness that might just change your life. . . . [McDougall] constructs a fascinating edifice of ideas . . . and eventually finds a modern-day hero of his own. But the pleasures of the book are as much to do with the fascinating panoply of characters, war heroes all, British, Commonwealth and Cretan, whose exploits contributed so much to Hitler's downfall.” —The Independent (London)“In the thoroughly absorbing Natural Born Heroes, which tracks heroism from the times of Zeus and Odysseus to the World War II bravery of a motley crew of fighters, Christopher McDougall makes it clear that . . . heroes, both ancient and modern, are not somehow supernaturally endowed after all. Indeed, they may come by their skills quite naturally. . . . His extensive knowledge of fitness training, nutrition and physiology winds artfully around a tale of superhuman resistance during the Nazi occupation of the Greek island of Crete. . . . [McDougall] solves this mystery with a witty eye for every detail, inspiring his own captive audience along the way.” — BookPage (The Top Pick of the Month: Nonfiction)   “Compelling . . . engaging . . . provocative . . . with inquiries into the nature of heroism. . . . True heroism, as the ancients understood, isn’t about strength or boldness or even courage. It’s about compassion.” —Kirkus Reviews   “Riveting. . . . A well-done recounting of a truly heroic episode of WWII. . . . In absorbing detail, McDougall describes how . . . ‘ordinary’ men who were far from stereotypically tough, battle-hardened warriors . . . trekked across tortuous mountain terrain while avoiding a massive German dragnet..” —BooklistFrom the Hardcover edition.

This book came to me at a perfect time: I was overtraining and I needed to take a breather (to be more specific, my body had forced me to do so). I get all up in this book's face in 2 different ways: (1) The nutritional "diet"/ training it speaks about, and (2) the backstory that blankets the entire book.(1) I know little to nothing about nutrition, and shouldn't be trusted very much in regards to advice in that arena, but the book has steered me in a right direction in terms of changing the foods that make up my daily diet---what to limit, what to increase---and that (among other recommendations from actual trainers) has drastically improved not only my athletic performances, but I just simply feel healthier. Like McDougall suggests we all do, I'm just trying to get to a state of holistic health to where I can function like, well, a kid in a playground. To that end, his writings are incredibly thought-provoking and damn-near mindblowing.(2) The unbelievable story of a bunch of rag-tag nobodies kidnapping a Nazi high-ranking officer already has my attention (and I'm sure McDougall is keenly aware of how cool this story is), and tale itself from beginning to end is as captivating as you might imagine. Great job of teasing it out.Toward the latter parts of the book, I thought that some of the time-jumping (you switch between his present-day adventures, WWII, and sometimes somewhere in between) got confusing, and it made me do some re-reading in case I glossed over some important points. Not a deal-breaker for me, but thought you should know.In the end, I think that this book has a TON of information about eating/fueling/exercising in a notably different way than I'm used to, but it is also bursting at the seams with little asides for subjects that could have their own book of this size or even greater (Crossfit movement, why humans were so successful at hunting, heart rate training, performing athletically under said proper heart rate, extracting essential foods from your local surroundings, etc.). I would heartily suggest that you read this and use it as a springboard to other subjects within that interest you. McDougall's book has set me on a course of heart rate training that I had been postponing for years, and I can say without question that I'm an improved athlete and a healthier person due to his research and experiences. Is this for everyone? Why, of course not. Each athlete has their own set of eccentricities and particular things that their body responds positively to, and I would humbly ask that you take that into account if you execute anything within here.Remember: even if you hate exercise, it's got one hell of a WWII story, so there's that.

I think someone said that the farther we get away from historical events the better we understand them. World War II is almost beyond living memory now and yet stories keep emerging about till now unsung but consequential contributions to the Allied effort – the effort that kept the world from coming under the thumb of Hitler and his Third Reich. One such story is the battle for Crete. And that story, fantastic as it is, serves as the backbone of Christopher McDougall’s latest book, Natural Born Heroes.McDougal came to fame as an author with the success of his first book, Born To Run, which told the story of an obscure, hidden indigenous tribe somewhere in the wilds of Mexico that produces men who are able to run unbelievable distances at unbelievable speeds – without shoes. Like that book, Natural Born Heroes is also concerned with local, untrained men who are able to accomplish almost unbelievable physical feats.I would describe this book as layered. It’s not strictly chronological. It weaves back and forth between the main story – the capture of a German General during the occupation of Crete during World War II – and stories about Greek culture and the daily lives of the type of men who carried off this breathtaking capture and escape. The book is filled with stories about the various kinds of physical and dietary regimens being discovered and practiced today that mimic or approximate the native lifestyle of the hardy Cretan. He writes about Parkour, primal eating and various kinds of self-defense systems.I read a lot of books, but it has been a long time since I enjoyed a book so thoroughly. I found myself making time in my days to get back to it and looking forward to the hours set aside for it. The story of the battle of Crete is enough, in and of itself, to rivet one’s attention. As the book tells us, when Hitler’s Chief of Staff was being tried for war crimes, he blamed the loss of the war not on the resolve of the British or the entry of the Americans intro the European theater but on the dogged resistance of the Cretan citizenry whose efforts stymied the German plan for immediate subjugation. Hitler had planned to move his armies to the Russian front in the spring and defeat the Russians in battle there before the terrible winter set in and his troops be caught in ice and snow. But the Greeks gave him more trouble than he ever imagined. In fact, it took longer for Germany to establish its command on the tiny island of Crete than it did for them to conquer France. Because of the resistance of the Cretans, Hitler was not able to move his armies to the Russian front in a timely way and because of that they did get mired in the awful Russian winter and because of that they lost on the Russian front and, according at least to Hitler’s number one man, because of that , they lost the war. That is saying a mouthful: that the freedom that the world has enjoyed for the last seventy years or so is due in large part to the pranks and hardheadedness of a local citizenry that prevailed against incredible odds. But the other stuff is great, too. The forays back into the ancient history of Greece and Crete. The stories of King Minas and the Minotaur. The stories of Aristotle and Plato. The stories of Troy and Sparta; of Odysseus and Achilles and Ajax.McDougal has been criticized elsewhere for filling the book up with stories that are unrelated to each other. I disagree with that criticism. Even if the ancient myths and the character of the men who participated in the resistance in 20th century Crete are separated by millennia, it all makes sense to me. The past does matter and it does affect the character of a place and its inhabitants. The stories of modern day exercise and diet, even if not precisely the same as that of the Cretans, is nonetheless dramatic and informative. We ought to be stronger and more healthy than we are and this book is a kind of expose for why we aren’t and what we might do to improve our lot.Overtime: A Basketball Parable

Many diverse ideas brought into a fascinating tale which cover from diet to how the people of Crete probably changed the outcome of WW2 making the German army's late leaving to invade Russia which led to their repeat of Napoleon's demise just short of Moscow as winter snows and freezing moved in. Their diet allowed them to be such fierce adversaries, for example, running double marathons through the mountains without eating. Junk scientific research misunderstood the Cretan diet which has now become the Mediterranean diet espoused by supposed diet experts. In fact In fact it was the rigid fasting regime of the Greek Orthodox Church and the high protein and high fat diet is what made them so metabolically strong. If interested in this aspect read Nina Teicholtz's book "Big Fat Surprise" which details how the misbegotten science came about creating the Mediterranean diet.

Chris has done it again. Weaving multiple stories into a cohesive tapestry is his forte. It took me a chapter or so to get into it, but after thst I was hooked. As with BtR his research has led me into more reading and a deeper understanding. Thanks to his work I have gained a much greater appreciation of the human body and of my own fitness and health. He reset my concept of ehat 'hero' means and changed my perspective on general fitness disciplines like parcour (sp?) and cross fit. I'm finding his logic reflected in other research and am glad he is using his voice to educating and entertaining

Like others have said, if you are a beginner hoping to learn the basics of 3D printing then this book will be great for you. It covers a broad range of topics that are applicable to specific 3D printing technologies. So on that end, it's a great book and I would give it 5 stars. However, if you are like me and using 3D printing everyday and have been for years, this book will likely not be that helpful to you. I was expecting a more detailed book that really got into the weeds of 3D printing - acceleration speeds, microstepping, back-pressure issues, retraction settings, dual extrusion, direct drive vs. bowden setups, flow rates, etc. I just simply misunderstood the purpose of the book when I bought it. So as for a technical textbook I would only give it 3 stars. So should you buy it? Well it depends. If you're looking to learn about 3D printing and various applications and nothing more, then yes - by all means. But if you REALLY want to learn about 3D printing, skip the book, save up and buy an actual 3D printer. Getting your hands dirty with a cheap, open-source 3D printer is by far the best way to really learn the depths of 3D printing. Note: there will be times where you'll want to bang your head against the wall, but it's worth it.

Not at all a handbook of 3d printing. This book is a summary of types of 3d printing. There is no point to this book, it will not help anyone other than to summarize the types of 3d printing and what 3d printing can be used for. How this book has such a high rating is odd. I was looking specifically for a book to show how you can get better prints and improve quality, that would be called a handbook by any traditional author, wouldn't it?

This is a superb comprehensive guide on 3D printing, not an on-boarding book for beginners. It is written with cohesive understanding of the entire 3D printing landscape, thus it functions as a manual providing surface to semi-advanced information on all 3D printing technologies, including lesser-known types. The only downside of this is: to most people familiar with 3D printing (makers who mostly deal with FDM), 70% of the book might be irrelevant, because it discusses industrial 3D printing processes not accessible at this time.If you need an all-in-one guide on 3D printing as a whole, this is an invaluable resource. If you want a guide to FDM printing and its applications, there might be publications more dedicated to FDM exclusively.

The title is a little bit misleading for engineers, scientists, and so on... It is an introduction to 3D printing presented in a concise way that would certainly be appealing to high school students and non-highly technical readers that would like to know more about additive manufacturing. A real handbook would actually contain more technical information (in greater depth) that would be usable by engineers and technical personnel involved in additive manufacturing. The cost & page count is certainly low for a handbook so not really a total surprise.

This book covers all the 3D possible options in regard to material and type of printers for today s marketBecause it s so wide you n its topic do not a expect to find any advanced technics or help for your 3D printing. If you are a neophyte this is a good general introduction of what printer might fit your needs.

It's not really a go to handbook to find technical details about different techniques in 3D printing. It's more of a list of summaries of different types/styles of printing and general/brief overviews on some basics things to consider when using a certain printing style. Besides this, this book's design and conveying of the information it intends to convey is done beautifully. I just have a problem with the title including the term handbook.

Good introduction with some information that is not widely known. Very good way to get started in the world of 3d printing with some great diagrams.

The first thing you will notice is that the book is beautifully crafted (including that nice new book smell). It uses clear typography and overall the balance between text and pictures is well thought of. The book consists of 3 sections:- The first section explains the full spectrum of 3D printing. Most people will be familiar with FDM (or the book calls it FFF), however other 3D Printing technologies such as SLA, DLP, etc. are covered equally.- The second section provides more details on what you need to consider in the design phase; again laid out for each 3D Printing technology. Understanding the various limitations and possibilities is crucial when you use a particular technology.- The third part presents for each 3D Printing technology possible applications, again for each of the various 3D Printing technologies.Personally, the first section gave me more insight in all the available 3D Printing technologies and was very educational. Most useful to me was actually the second section, as it provided specific guidance in creating 3D models and how that will affect the outcome. All in all, this is a great book to have and is a great addition to your library; for both seasoned engineers and people that want to get started with 3D Printing.

Secret Medicines from Your Garden: Plants for Healing, Spirituality, and Magic, by Ellen Evert Hopman

Review

“The secret in Ellen Hopman’s new text is the rich framework she presents for herbal medicine. By knowing herbs through the lenses of the seasons, the garden, the body, the stars, and more, the beginner will develop well-nourished roots and clear, practical skills with a wide range of plants. The advanced student will appreciate the thorough guide to formulation and blending, which makes this book an important reference text.” (Guido Masé, codirector of the Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism, chief herbalist of Urba)“Rare are those herbalists who understand the perfection of balance when knowledge is based both upon the wisdom that has survived the passing of millennia and knowledge that is affirmed with the modern tools of research and analysis. I encourage you to take the intimate journey Ellen Evert Hopman offers you in Secret Medicines from Your Garden. Her opening sentence resounds as a truth in my own life as well. And from that sentence onward, as she shares her own journey into the study of herbal medicine, she will engage you as a trusted friend and as someone who goes out of her way to always speak with clarity. The recipes and preparations are delicious, the medicinal information trustworthy, and the historical references reflect academic accuracy. This book should go home with you. And then? Let Ellen take you on a wonderful journey into our herbal world.” (Paul Beyerl, master herbalist, author of The Master Book of Herbalism, and founder of The Hermit&rsq)“This is the most tantalizing type of herb book--the kind I love most--filled with lore and history, myth and magic, and the author’s own rich experiences weaving the tales together. We are led on a most unique multidimensional journey to the heart of herbalism. Along the way we are taught how to use plants for medicine, daily well-being, ritual, and ceremony.” (Rosemary Gladstar, herbalist, founder of United Plant Savers, and author of Planting the Future: Sav)“Just like in nature where you encounter the same herb many times but in different ways, Ellen Evert Hopman’s new book takes you on a spiraling exploration into the world of healing plants. Your first encounter is a taste, the next a healing brew, and then a story as if around a campfire. She also shares, for the first time in print, the brilliant herbal formulation technique of the late (great) herbalist William LeSassier. What a delight to journey with Ellen as she shares her extensive experience and knowledge of the rich diversity found in each plant!” (Pam Montgomery, herbalist, educator, and author of Plant Spirit Healing and Partner Earth)“Ellen Evert Hopman is a master herbalist who understands both the physical and spiritual nature of plants. In Secret Medicines from Your Garden she draws on her extensive experience and brings us a wonderful book that is so much more than the average herbal. Packed full of practical guidance, accessible information, and useful recipes, this original and beautifully illustrated book takes us deep into nature and teaches how plants can nourish both body and soul. Ellen is making a significant contribution to contemporary plant wisdom. Highly recommended for anyone interested in plant spirits, herbal lore, and plant magic.” (Carole Guyett, medical herbalist, Celtic priestess, and author of Sacred Plant Initiations)“Like a box of bonbons, this collection of arcane and useful herbal lore will delight and entertain you, no matter your mood. Secret Medicines from Your Garden courses through bee-humming meadows and skirts hedgerows guarded by rowan woods, while eating flower sandwiches and pouring libations for the fairies. You will love this new and wonderful treasure from the enchanted pen of Ms. Hopman.” (Susun S. Weed, author of the Wise Woman Herbal Series)“Her eyes opened to the power and beauty of nature first by the Franciscan community near Assissi in northern Italy and subsequently by the New Age community of Findhorn in Scotland, Ellen Evert Hopman felt called to work with plants in all their forms and guises. After an herbal apprenticeship with William LeSassier, the visionary herbalist and creator of the Triune formulation system, she spent five years studying the herbal ways of Native American elders. Declaring herbalism a lifelong learning path, this book is a distillation of all the knowledge she has acquired from the natural world and its benefits for our physical, mental, and spiritual health. It is a fascinating, educational, and highly enjoyable read brimming with practical ideas, recipes, and rich in history as well an important reference work from an accomplished herbalist, author, and all around plant woman.” (Alex Dover, medical herbalist)“This book is multifaceted, a gem that is full of information about our personal green paths that encompass medicine, food, religion, and ritual.” (Mary Pat Palmer, registered herbalist and director of the Philo School of Herbal Energetics, Philo,)“A delightful collection of nature’s wisdom translated into an easy-to-follow instructional book of herbal medicine. Ellen provides a great medicinal resource while inviting you to cultivate your intuition and connect with the spiritual components of plant medicine.” (Aviva D. Wertkin, N.D., founder of Naturae Medical)“In Secret Medicines from Your Garden, Ellen Evert Hopman takes the reader on a fascinating tour of various facets of herbalism: In part one, "A Wildcrafting Primer," we learn about medicinal and delicious plants to harvest in each season, as well as cold and flu care and plants to repel insects. In part two we meet animal spirit medicines, herbal astrology, plant spirits, and more. Part three encourages us to enjoy nature's bounty from honey to hedgerows, and includes two full chapters on tree medicine. Part four brings the reader into some finer points of formulation and developing protocols, including the details of William LeSassier's method of formulation. Drawing on many traditions, this book is likely to have something for everyone!” (Phoenix Books "staff picks," Kristen Eaton - Manager, February 2016)

Ellen Evert Hopman is one of the few herbalists I trust implicitly. Her information is always accurate, well-researched and beautifully presented. And this book ... this book is so much more. I was prepared to read it through with interest. I found myself stopping frequently to compare her life's journey with mine. The amount of information and memoir and gee-why-didn't-I-see-that? is just brilliant. Thank you, Ellen Evert Hopman, for another glorious contribution to the world of green medicine and reverence for all life on our beautiful planet.

Contains a lot of necessary information. Very well written.

For a novice like me, this was an excellent starting point

great

So well organized! This book has a little bit of everything.

Well written book on Herbs.

This book doesn't just tell you what each plant is good for but what characteristics will help you remember. Is the plant solitary or cluster? Hot dry climate or cool wet climate? And recipes.

Enlightening and enjoyable

This book is only first volume. It is not complete 9 volume work. Name is misleading. Table-of-content shown is fraud. Only volume I is present. No page numbers and no clearly marked sections. This is one continuous book where chapters and sections starts anywhere in the middle of the page and titles are not bold either. They are in same font as regular text making hard to spot. I left one star for print quality.Old review:I was looking for Swamiji's complete work which comes as multiple volumes. But this is a single book. I don't think it has all volumes combined based on its size. Also its a strange book. It has no page numbers. It has no separation of chapters. Chapters starts inline with regular text anywhere on the page and have same text size, format as rest of the text. So without page numbers and no chapter/section separation, it is difficult to read. Better by 9 volume set. I gave ** for paper and print quality which is good.

The most substantial "negative" comment on this volume in past reviews is that there is no TOC. I hesitated to urchase this book but decided to download the trial first to see if a TOC had been added sinc ethat negative review was posted. And..yes, there is now a TOC. As of today (Jan. 6 2015) there is a very detailed TOC with live links to each section of eafch volume. The TOC is so large that it is difficult to navigate but this is easily remedied by doing a search for the word "Volume" - you get a list of each of the 9 volume headings and from there you can click on whatever section you want. Each section is also numbered so if you know the volume and section you are looking for you can search on the number (for example 7.1) and navigate directly to that section or any of its subsectoins (7.1.1, 7.1.2 etc.)Combine this workable TOC with the Kindle's ability to search for any concept (like "karma") and this Kindle edition is a practical a way to access Vivekananda's writings and talks as you are ever likely to find. As a bonus text to speech (TTS) is enabled. If you have a fluid TTS voice installed on your tablet (my favorite is the British TTS voice "Brian" which is available on the HDX tabletsg) you an turn on text to speech and imagine you are at one of Vivekananda's talks.

As a Christian in the world today, I believe it is also important to be familiar with other religious traditions. I must also confess having a long term fascination with Hinduism simply because it is the oldest of the major religions of the world, the others being Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. I also respect Hinduism as I find many of its practitioners to be humble and good people. What I like most about Swami Vivekananda is the freshness of his writing, which is saying something because it is over a century old. There is a sense of immediacy to these essays, lectures, and letters. You get a bang for the buck here with this series of 8 volumes, which are in a handsome set and easy to read. SwamiJI covers a wide range of topics including many lectures and essays on Hinduism, the Vedas, Christianity, and the place of religion in the world. For Christians, it is insightful to see how followers of another faith based tradition speak of you!In addition there are many practical lectures on meditation, and yoga, popular topics today. If you're not familiar with Swami Vivekananda, there are many videos on Youtube where you can get your feet wet as it were. I'd start there and then start reading. You can't go wrong with the Complete Works!

This kindle version of this book was the need of these days....we need to spread Swamiji's work in every way possible. If you are interested in Hinduism or Budhhism or Indian Culture or you are just in search for a greater peaceful life you should read this book. Just to reach all the people we are getting this a way below than a nominal rate. But the content of this book can change your view towards life forever. I hope all the Indians may already know about Swamiji a little or more. For the Non-Indian people I am giving a little history about his profound influence on Western Countries:Swami Vivekananda, the nineteenth-century Indian Hindu monk is considered as one of the most influential people of modern India and Hinduism.Vivekananda, during and after his tour of western countries in Europe and the United States had profound influence on notable personalities, who either became his ardent devotees or friends and some even his ardent disciples and many of whom even became ascetics. Right at the beginning of his visit to Chicago to address the Parliament of World Religions Professor John Henry Wright of Harvard University, invited him to speak at Harvard. He pointed out to Vivekananda the necessity of going to the Parliament of Religions, which he thought would give an introduction to the nation. Wright's reasoning was "To ask for your credentials is like asking the sun to state its right to shine in the heavens". Some of such well-known luminaries are: Max Müller (Indologist), J. J. Goodwin, John Henry Barrows, Mark Twain, Sturdy, Romain Rolland, Sara Chapman Bull, his American mother and benefactor, Mary Hale, Josephine MacLeod, Christine Greenstidel (who later came to be known as Sister Christine, Maragaret Noble (Sister Nivedita in later years), William James, Josiah Royce, Robert G. Ingersoll, Nikola Tesla, Lord Kelvin, Harriet Monroe, Ella Wheeler Wilcox, Sarah Bernhardt, Emma Calvé and Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz He initiated several followers : Marie Louise (a French woman) became Swami Abhayananda, and Leon Landsberg became Swami Kripananda.American industrialist John D. Rockefeller reportedly made his first large donation for public welfare and later became a notable philanthropist after a meeting with Vivekananda. Vivekananda succinctly explained to Rockfeller that his philanthropy would only be a channel to help the poor and distressed people.Vivekananda influenced French Opera singer Emma Calvé, who wrote in her autobiography:It has been my good fortune and my joy to know a man who truly "walked with God," a noble being, a saint, a philosopher, and a true friend. His influence upon my spiritual life was profound. He opened up new horizons before me, enlarging and vivifying my religious ideas and ideals, teaching me a broader understanding of truth. My soul will bear him an eternal gratitude.Vivekananda's life and works have influenced many scholars, writers, politicians worldwide. French writer Romain Rolland wrote that Vivekananda was "energy personified". Rolland felt "kingliness" was Vivekananda's characteristics, "He was a born king and nobody ever came near him in India or America without paying homage to his majesty." American writer, historian, philosopher Will Durant told, the speeches of Vivekananda were more "virile" than the ones delivered in the Vedic times. The nationalist leader and the first president of independent Indonesia Sukarno said that it was Swami Vivekananda who inspired him to become strong and to serve God and mankind. Historian and Indologist Arthur Llewellyn Basham compared Vivekananda with other eminent religious figures of India such as Kabir, Adi Shankara, Chaitanya. Russian academician and public figure Eugene Chelyshev was an ardent admirer of Swami Vivekananda. He said:"Reading and re-reading the works of Vivekananda each time I find in them something new that helps deeper to understand India, its philosophy, the way of the life and customs of the people in the past and the present, their dreams of the future..."Barack Obama, the President of the United States, quoted Vivekananda's words in his speech delivered in India in November 2010. He said:"Instead of succumbing to division, you have shown that the strength of India—the very idea of India—is its embrace of all colors, castes and creeds. It's the diversity represented in this chamber today. It's the richness of faiths celebrated by a visitor to my hometown of Chicago more than a century ago—the renowned Swami Vivekananda. He said that, "holiness, purity and charity are not the exclusive possessions of any church in the world, and that every system has produced men and women of the most exalted character."

These nine volumes are like an encyclopedia. It has everything Karma Yoga, Raja Yoga, Bhakti Yoga & Jnana yoga. It also contains lectures given by Swamiji on Gita, Upanishada, Vedanta and so on. And of course one gets to know Swami Vivekananda and his teachings.Although its available online, I am very happy to have it on my Kindle.Thanks.

As both a publishing veteran and a TV pro, Lisa Cron knows storytelling. In Wired for Story she shares her fascinating psychological approaches to the craft. Her fresh way of looking at the core essentials of writing has our neurons firing. - Writer's Digest. . . how can you craft a story compelling enough to keep readers turning the pages deep into the night? The answer lies in a new book linking writing to neuroscience, Lisa Cron's Wired for Story: The Writer's Guide to Using Brain Science. - Arnie Cooper - Poets & WritersLisa Cron's Wired for Story: The Writer's Guide to Using Brain Science to Hook Readers from the Very First Sentence is relentlessly interesting because it reveals how our brains perceive and process stories and narratives. Ms. Cron walks the writer through the mental architecture of a story, patiently revealing what works and what doesn't and why. She writes with clarity and humor about elementary things every writer could profit from revisiting under her auspices. I have been an author for decades and published 4 books. I've been an editor for over a decade and this book is perfect for seasoned and new writers. It certainly made me take a new, long look at the latest book I'm busy with. I think it's great for getting one focused on the important points. I loved it. There wasn't too much about how the brain works to bore one or make it feel like a technical book on neuroscience. I found her writing style amusing and entertaining. I will definitely recommend it to all my clients and writing friends. There was nothing in the book I didn't know, but this book forces one to focus on the bigger picture. It doesn't matter how accomplished one is as a writer, one can always learn more. And I certainly did with this book. So, thank you, Ms. Cron. I saw the negative three or fewer star comments and can only think the commentators didn't see what the author was actually trying to convey. It's a classic lesson in the KISS method (keep it simple stupid) and I loved it.This isn't a full-on, in-depth analysis of every part of the craft of writing, as many seemed to expect, that would take 12 full books or more. This is also not only for beginners as some suggest. To them I would say, don't let hubris cloud your ability to write better--think beyond that--read the book again. I think the book serves as an excellent reference to keep us on track when we lose the plot, so to speak.Seasoned writers can get quite jaded and write almost on auto-pilot at times--not good. Thank you, Ms. Cron, for putting me back on track and making me excited to re-write and re-edit my latest book, my first YA fantasy, for the zillionth time. I was out of my comfort zone with this book and feeling a bit overwhelmed and unsure. Wired for Story has me fired up to go forth and do this.I highly recommend this book, especially for seasoned writers.

Our brains, Lisa Cron tells us, are designed by evolution to reward us for paying attention to a certain kind of story. The tale that rewards us is one that promises a lesson—and then delivers. The protagonist must confront a choice that matters to his or her life. Whatever choice is made, the consequences that follow are the lesson, and such learning, even through the mythical lessons of others' success or failure, is a survival mechanism. So: Should Joe have bacon or kippers for breakfast? Not a world-shaking or life-changing choice.Except... what if choosing bacon meant that Joe would soon be in a battle for his life, because of a mutated pestilence that had infected the swine from which the bacon was made? To catch the reader's attention, the story must show right from the beginning the serious nature of Joe's breakfast choice, and then incorporate the consequences in a way that rewards the expectant reader.According to Cron, it isn't the obviousness of the dilemma, but the way it is presented—the way it is written—that absorbs that survival skill in the brain, and rewards the ardent listener to a well-told story.

I liked this book. As a writer and self-professed nerd, it was right up my alley. But the science isn't so hard-core that it should frighten any non-nerds away! It's a good overview of what readers expectations for stories are.... and why that is. That's always useful information as we are going through the writing and editing process, especially if we want the best, most polished and marketable product possible. Art is art. But in the end, it doesn't matter how beautiful your prose, because story does matter. If you want something that emotionally appeals to readers and will actually sell, this book could help you.Loved the mention of using engrams for character development. I've toyed around with this in my writing. I think it would help lots of writers make characters that are more believable and consistent in their actions.

Wired for Story is a book full of solid, albeit basic, advice for story tellers, and in particular writers trying to develop their craft. It succeeds in some areas while falls down in others, however I found it solid and well written overall.Where it succeeds is in its brevity and clarity. The author gets right to the point and even provides short lists at times of what to do and how to do it. Her writing is also peppered with cheeky humor which is humorous in a thats-almost-funny kind of way that is refreshing compared to the textbook style adopted by many how-to-write books.Where the book fell down, for me, was in its limited examples and scope. It really felt like the author was addressing romance writers, for the most part. I could think of a few counter examples to some of her rules, although one would have to leave the romance genre for those to work. But for a 230 page book, that is minor discrepancy. The second thing I noticed, which has already been pointed out by others, is that the brain science was limited. In fact, it was mostly only refereed to in footnote. Personally, that was fine with me, but I could see why it made others feel misled (it is in the title, after all).
